AUBREEVISION - Observations from the far side of the dial
the sexification of cancer
As I was performing my all-too-sporadic breast self-exam while lying in bed this morning, I got to thinking about the glamourization of breast cancer. It's something that's been on my mind lately as I've noted an explosion of merchandise sold in the name of breast cancer research -- everything from ribbon-logo designer yoga pants to pink Post-It notes. I certainly recognize that breast cancer is a terrible disease, and intend no disrespect to those affected. However, here's my issue: it seems that breast cancer is becoming more a fashion statement than a disease. This performs a disservice to two parties: less "marketable" diseases and causes receive less attention and funding, and while this wave of pink propaganda is meant to highlight the seriousness of breast cancer, I'd argue that it actually does the opposite by reducing it to a Hollywoodized cause-du-jour.
So that's my perspective. What's yours?
